WHAT IS HALLUX VALGUS

Hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe joint where the big toe gradually angles inwards towards the other toes. At the same time, the joint at the base of the big toe can start to bulge outwards, which is often experienced as a bump on the inside of the foot. For many, this means that pressure and friction occur in the forefoot, especially in shoes that are narrow across the toe area.

Hallux valgus often develops slowly over time. It can be influenced by several factors, such as the shape of the foot, heredity, or shoes that compress the toes for a long period.

Common signs of Hallux Valgus

The most common signs of hallux valgus are:

  • the big toe angles inwards towards the other toes

  • a bump forms at the big toe joint

  • tenderness or pressure over the joint

  • irritation or chafing in shoes

For some, hallux valgus mostly causes cosmetic changes, while others may experience pain or discomfort when bearing weight.

Why adequate toe room is important

When the toes are compressed in the forefoot, pressure on the big toe joint increases. Therefore, many people with hallux valgus find that shoes and socks that provide more room in the forefoot make a big difference to comfort.

Socks with a wide toe box or toe socks can help reduce friction between the toes and give the foot better conditions to move naturally.

Small changes can make a big difference

For many, it's not about a single solution, but about creating better conditions for the foot in everyday life. Shoes with more room in the forefoot, socks that don't compress the toes, and allowing the foot to move more naturally can help reduce discomfort over time.
